Puerto Plata

The birthplace of tourism in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata continues to pack a mighty punch. Its spectacular, sprawling landscape combines sea, mountains, lush valleys, rivers, and a multitude of beaches. Its fertile soil grows cacao and coffee trees, while underneath rests the world’s clearest amber.
Savvy explorer Christopher Columbus knew there was much to discover on this northern Atlantic coastline–eventually finding gold deposits–when he glimpsed it from his ship in 1492. Drawn by the sight of clouds shimmering over Mount Isabel de Torres and illuminating Puerto Plata’s vast blue shoreline, he named the area the “Silver Port” and settled at La Isabela with a mixed community of Tainos–original inhabitants of the area–and Spaniards, built the first church and his first home in the Americas. You can follow Columbus’s trail and tour these archeological ruins, now part of a national park.

Mirador Park is located in the city centre, it is a beautiful place to go for a walk while discovering its landscapes and local history. This park has several Jewish symbols in tribute to those who run away from the Nazi persecution.

The well-known Jewish Community Museum is located near a synagogue, and it will show you the history of 700 Jewish colonists, who were welcome between 1939 and 1945 as Second World War refugees. These Jews escaped from the Nazi persecution and settled down in this area, they boosted a strong dairy and meat industry and left an important, deep cultural impact in the city.

Additionally, Mundo King Art Museum has a great exhibition of Dominican and Haitian art that can make you understand the culture of this Antillean island.

Los Charamicos is the most visited area in the city, as well as El Batey, the majority of the hotels and shops are located there.

Sosúa is famous for its cuisine. There are several restaurants in the city, where you can taste the best traditional Dominican food.
